Choosing DDR / LPDDR IP: qualify the whole memory subsystem

Translate bandwidth, power and package constraints into a controller-and-PHY qualification plan.

Start with traffic, not the speed grade

Begin with sustained reads and writes, burst sizes, simultaneous requesters, latency limits and idle periods. A peak transfer rate cannot tell you whether a camera pipeline meets its deadline while the CPU and accelerator compete for memory.

Micron’s DDR5 enablement resources include electrical and thermal models; its LPDDR5 material emphasizes low-power applications. These inform evaluation but do not prove that a third-party controller or PHY supports your chosen memory device.

Worked example: bandwidth is a ceiling

For a hypothetical 32-bit data interface at 6,400 MT/s, raw data-pin bandwidth is 6,400 × 10⁶ × 32 ÷ 8 = 25.6 GB/s. MT/s already counts transfers; do not multiply by two again for DDR. GB here means 10⁹ bytes. This illustrative configuration is not a claimed CSNovus product.

At an assumed 65% useful utilization, the planning budget becomes 16.64 GB/s. That percentage is an assumption to validate with real traffic, not a property of the standard. Request traces covering refresh, read/write turnarounds, bank conflicts and arbitration. Include worst-case latency, not just average throughput.

Qualify controller, PHY and DRAM together

Freeze the DRAM part number, organization, capacity, package and temperature range. Request a compatibility matrix for controller version, PHY version, interface revision and training firmware. A shared protocol name is too coarse to be an integration contract.

For the PHY, identify the foundry process option, metal stack, I/O voltage and package conditions behind quoted results. For the controller, review QoS, error reporting, low-power transitions and verification support. Assign ownership for boot-time training, diagnostics and firmware updates.

Compare reproducible evidence

Use identical workload and operating assumptions for every candidate. Separate simulation estimates from silicon measurements and record the tested configuration. A lower headline rate may be preferable if it meets the full latency and power budget with stronger integration evidence.

Bring these to your IP evaluation

  • Bring a traffic profile and latency budget.
  • Name exact DRAM, PHY and process options.
  • Agree measurable acceptance criteria and training ownership.
